What to remember when choosing your company name

One of the most important parts of your business is its name. You may already have a name in mind, but you should confirm availability before moving forward.

A proposed company name may be rejected if it is identical or too similar to an existing business name registered in your state. Each state has its own rules, but these guidelines are common.

Common name rejection reasons

  1. Spacing and punctuation usually do not make a name different.
  2. “And” and “&” are often treated as the same.
  3. Singular and plural versions of a word may be considered the same.
  4. Numbers and written numbers may be considered the same.
  5. Abbreviations may be treated like the full word.
  6. Words like “The”, “A”, and “An” may not make a name unique.
  7. Entity endings like LLC, Inc., Corp., or Corporation usually do not make a name different.
Please Note: If your company name is rejected by the Secretary of State, your formation may take longer. IncZone allows you to provide alternative names so your filing can keep moving when possible.
